domestic landscape

Past economic and political restrictions in Russia, and present restrictions in Cuba, have resulted in a particular fascination for the “other world” by Western society. Such constraints have produced a need to acquire the “other world”, to bring it closer through the use images that are sometimes incongruously displayed in the subject’s domestic life, or through owning iconic items from other cultures. Coca-Cola or McDonalds posters may be displayed alongside traditional religious icons, both representing different beliefs, but not necessarily distinguished by the owner. Photographic murals of Caribbean, Mediterranean or other landscapes displayed on the walls of Siberian bedrooms, kitchens or bathroom can transform everyday realities into metaphorically unreachable destinations and dreams.
